Birth Support Philosophy

My work with each family is unique. I customize my process based on communication and learning styles, requested information, trauma history, diagnoses, values and birth vision. It is my process as a doula to guide the birth team through a process of reflecting on their values, learning about the physiology of birth and tools for coping, and establishing preferences that will enable them a prideful experience. Holistic care of you makes for a profound birth experience, regardless of medical outcome.

Working with Morgan was the best decision my husband and I made during my pregnancy! Besides her being incredibly knowledgeable, completely non-judgmental, and guiding us through any and all moments of uncertainly, she also took the time to get to know us as a couple to figure out how our dynamic would work in creating the most successful labor possible.

Example Birth Process

Prenatal:

  1. Intake and content design session: Follow-up on your intake forms, deeper understanding of you and what is important in preparing for birth. Collaboration on what topics will enable you to feel the most prepared. After this, I will compile and email a custom childbirth education plan.

  2. In-Home Visit 1 Topics (example): Childbirth 101 (phases and decoding birth terms), evidence on medical interventions, value reflection and birth preference compilation. In this visit, we create the first draft of your birth preference sheet you will communicate with your team the day/night of your birth.

  3. In- Home Visit 2 Topics (example): Decision-making frameworks and how to navigate power and policy in your birth lcoation, perineal prep & reducing the risk of tearing 101, partner preparation, hands-on practice of comfort measures, communication and early labor plan (including guidance on when to go to the hospital, if applicable).

In-person Birth Support:

  1. Hands on comfort measures

  2. Facilitation of decision-making, sounding board based on your discussed goals and preferences

  3. Communciation and advocacy with your medical team

  4. Nonmedical suggestions for trouble-shooting common birth hurdles

  5. "On-call birth nerd" to provide evidence-based information on the events of your birth

Postpartum:

  1. Immediate postpartum support after your birth: facilitation of golden hour, initial lactation support, help with first meal and guidance through immediate physical recovery. I commit to stay in case immediate recovery period is unstable (if birthing person or baby require additional medical support).

  2. In-home visit: Anywhere from 1 week to 3 months postpartum, depending on what your needs are. Topics include trouble-shooting anything you are struggling with (lactation, sleep, routine-setting, leveraging external support people, transition back to work, etc.) and revisiting the memory of the birth.
